Spotlight series – Vera Soubbotina

In this week’s Spotlight we speak with Vera Soubbotina, Junior Commercial Manager at New Look!

Where are you from?

My parents are Russian and Ukranian, but I was raised in Sweden.

Where and what did you study?

I studied art and design, initially in Milan, Italy. Later, I did a Business Management degree in London.

Describe your current role and company.

I am the Junior Commercial Manager at New Look – International Partnerships. I work on our international business development via various partnership models.

Is this your first job in the industry? If not, which roles have you held previously?

I have worked within wholesale, e-commerce and recruitment on a part-time basis prior to joining New Look. I am also a London contributor to Swedish magazine Plaza Kvinna.

What has been the most surprising or interesting thing that you’ve learned so far?

New Look has a unique fast fashion business model and operates in different ways from many other ‘fast’ retailers. It took me a while to get my head around the mechanism and operational detail, but it is truly what makes us so good at what we do.

What do you enjoy about your job?

How dynamic my week is – I welcome and embrace change – no day is like any other!

Do you have any tips for students trying to forge a career in this area?

Be persistent and know your stuff. You need to know why you want to do the job and how you can add value. I believe that most people can learn ‘any’ job, but we should truly focus on what we are good at.

Finally – where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Consulting or freelancing, working for myself.
